Since my Debut performance at Dixie’s Dollhouse back in October last year, my burlesque performances have gone from strength to strength. Starting out with The Masochism Tango followed by Gypsy, Tru Blood and my newest act Jessica Rabbit Unleashed, my burlesque performance style is starting to unfold quite nicely.
To further promote my burlesque performances I had a lovely photoshoot with the wonderful and talented Mark Pinder who also recorded and mixed my vocals for my ‘Jessica’ act. You can see the video above and some pictures below. Do let me know what you think. Thanks for coming back again, I really appreciate your continuing support.

Whilst out hunting for bargains in one of my favourite second hand clothing shops I saw one whole rail of items all tagged under the ‘Vintage’ category. Imagine my delight! Normally I am lucky to find one piece in a whole days hunt and here was a whole rail full of glorious vintage loveliness. Alas, it was not to be. The garments on the rail were either from the 70s/80s or just old and worn. It seemed to me that the shop had simply wrote vintage on the tag to justify asking a higher price than they normally would. I suggested as much to the assistant who told me rather brusquely that those clothes were classified vintage in that shop.
I updated my facebook status when I returned home and the comments received prompted this blog. I have researched and dug about all over trying to answer the question of when and what can be classified as vintage. There are many varying opinions on the subject and no definitive answer or category specifications.
Antique - Clothes older than 100 years would be considered antique and not for normal wear.
Vintage – Clothes from a previous era that have some lasting value or effect.
Retro – Clothes that ‘reproduce’ the look or style of a previous era. Comes from ‘retrospective’ as in ‘looking back at’ or ‘harking back to’
This seems to be the general consensus. However, there is much more to it than that. To be considered vintage, a garment has to have something other than age going for it. After all if that jacket has a huge hole in it, it is still damaged goods no matter how old it is. Some vintage experts also suggest that items from a fad or short lived popularity cannot be considered vintage and any item that is present in the current market in a quantity of more than one is not vintage. Other experts will tell you that anything from 1920 to 1970 can be considered vintage, 1960 to 1989 is a retro period due to the fashions harking back to earlier in the century and anything after 1990 to now is just out of date. I have been told that modern designer dresses can be considered vintage after just two years!
All this really only matters if you are buying vintage clothing as an investment or because you want a guarantee that it is an original and noone else has the same item as you. It is almost impossible to guarantee vintage authenticity. If you are buying and selling vintage clothing it is advisable to state on your site or catalogue exactly what your vintage catagorisation is.
Personally I wouldn’t consider anything my Mum or myself could have bought new in the high street in our teens and twenties as vintage. This rules out the majority of items you might find in second hand clothes stores or thrift shops unless you’re really lucky and sometimes, just sometimes mind you, I am.
Happy hunting!

Wednesday 29th December 2010 saw the very first Gully’s event taking place at the Blackfriars Ballroom and what a show it was! People turned out in their very finest toppers, bow ties, corsets and taches to witness Gully’s history in the making!
Tall Tales and Short Stories got the show off to a superb start with a tale of a magician who sold his soul to Devil! In three exciting episodes these scallywags held the audience spellbound with their tale of licentious greed and satanic mischief. The audience were then treated to some traditional burlesque performances including a spellbinding act from Bettina Spankenhaus and her naughty Phantom of the Opera – Bob, a beautiful fan dance in the delicious form of Constance Peach’s Black Swan, a cutesy Dorothy aka Daisy Chainsaw, a pert Dee La Beau with a shampoo fetish, a luscious bump’n'grind from Marissa Rosaria, a tantalising tease from Miss Mirabelle Blush and a spectacular Charlie Chaplin from the master of Boylesque, Warren Speed.

Comedy from Alfie Joey had the audience in tears of laughter especially at his returning aeroplane and very talented impression. Musical mayhem ensued with The Vaudeville Class very special dirty blues sound and The Stillwells quirky and addictive acoustic delights. Their rendition of ‘Magic Dance’ and ‘Ballad of a Rent Boy’ will remain in my favourites for some time to come.
A surprise appearance from Chris Cross completed the evening as he proceeded to poke a screwdriver through his tongue and delighted the photographers with an impromptu posing session on stage.

Don’t take my word for it folks. Here’s what some of the audience had to say about the evening
‘We all really enjoyed the evening, and the format was very, very good. I’m looking forward to the next one!’
‘We had a great night last Wednesday, twas a right mixed bag of entertainment. Thankyou very much.’
‘Overall a fantastic night, really looking forward to whatever you put together next time!’
Many thanks to all the cast, the photographers, the staff at Blackfriars Ballroom and most of all to the wonderful audience! Don’t miss the next Gully’s event coming in the spring. Keep checking back for more updates.
See you at the next Gully’s!

You’ve spent a kings ransom on gifts for everyone, cleaned your pied-à-terre until you can see your face in the carpet, shopped, jostled, wrapped, cursed and shopped some more before you finally collapse exhausted into your onsie on Christmas Eve only to wake up on Christmas Day to start the veggies, roast the turkey, play Monopoly/Hungry Hippos/the latest computer game (delete as required) and supervise the arguments about who got more sweets than who. Then comes Boxing Day when, no doubt, you do the same thing all over again. (Well, we did in my family anyway) When do you get to play, laugh, sing, dance? New Year’s Eve?
Gully thinks this is much too long a wait and has arranged a superb line up for the Victorian Winter Wonderland Variety Performance taking place on Wednesday 29th December 2010 at The Blackfriars Ballroom, New Bridge Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. Just take a look at this and then book your tickets – This is an adult show for people who understand that fun is not just for children!
Book your tickets here now for just £8 in advance or just pay at the door for £10! A bonanza of a bargain!
